Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross
presented by Pasadena Athletic Association

Bring on the Belts
The race that had cyclist battling it out like title bout boxers was the annual Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross presented by Pasadena Athletic Association (www.paacyling.org). The Turkey Trot was held again for the love of cross, its commemorative purposes and to positively encourage others to exercise. It was a fun course as in 2006 but they made the sand pits deeper by digging them up with rakes, the hill climb harder by adding a water crossing entrance followed immediately by a short and soft dirt hill slope, and some technical hair pin turns hairier with a mixture of rutted piles of sand and wood chips. In all the day was perfect with good weather, a free barbeque of Turkey dogs, and fantastic racing SCPS #7 was underway.
This weeks racing was fast even after most people gorged themselves on heaps of food the Thursday prior. While the course had some fun technical sections and winding turns, it was mostly laid out on a fast flat park. The flats were composed of tacky clay dirt, hard grass, and long and hard or cemented straight-a-ways which changes the dynamic of the days race if the contenders can sprint or push it in the flats.
The Turkey Trot Cross presented some great battles, a lot of crashes and impressive numbers in many categories. The kids field was filled as the tiny tots raced the final stretch and the juniors group was up to a record 15 competitors. Young Danielle Hazeltine of the womens 10-14 age group took on the boys including my favorite racer on the day, the little guy sporting the giant red helmet on his tiny little blue Redline who peddled around the course but stopped to talk to people who were cheering him on. He explained his usual rides and mountain bike experience in a smiling yet earnest manner.
The early morning races had people talking because the racing was impressively fast. I heard comments like, I hope I can pedal that fast today or I better enter the kids race. There was a growing concern as the day wore on because more crashes were happening. Some racers requested that others go out on course and study some of the more technical turns and ruts so that there was less damage. The Masters groups took charge of the course early and smoothed out the course for the rest of the days racing.
The Mens Masters 45+ and 55+ showed their expertise as they rolled through the course with ease. Bobby Langin, Sr. (Team Platinum Performance) took the win in the 45+, while Jon Miller of Team Sho-Air showed off his skills with the efficiency of their Mountain Bike team. The largest group of the day was the Mens 4 with 39 racers and a variety of skill and power. In all, the group was fun as they pushed around in first or last and happy to be racing. The mens 3/4 had another impressive display by Bobby Langin, Jr. (Team Platinum) but he could not capture the win this week as he battled lap for lap Rodney Sauser of Team Dayton Bicycling who took the win. This race became exciting about halfway through as the two battled it out to the end down to the final sprint.
The turkey trottin womens elite saw some new racers and some old faces this week as Pua Sawicki (Team Ergon/Ellsworth) the popular Mountain bike endurance racing champion as she decided to come out and work on her short game during her off season from the mountain. She explained her interest in improving her speed in the flats while having some fun but it must have been difficult as she rolled around on her Ellsworth hard tail mountain bike. This experience made her promise to build up her new Ellsworth Roots cross frame. Sawicki said she is excited to get out to the next race. We saw the return of Melodie Metzger of the Cal Giant team back on course and Carolyn Popvic of team CICLE who has been doing a phenomenal job racing out on the east coast. When the race began again it was Coryn Rivera of Team Redline out front with Sawicki leading until the long straight grassy flats on the furthest end of the course where Rivera was able to eek away giving her the lead and eventually the win. In second it was Sawicki who battled it out with Carolyn Popovic (Team CICLE) finished third and Melodie Metzger in fourth. Rounding out the top six were Lana Atchley fifth of team Sho-Air and Dorothy Wong (Team CICLE) in Sixth. These two who were left behind by the lead group and struggled to get back after a big crash divided the race into two groups.
In the Mens Elite Brent Prenzlow of Alan North America took the belt. The man has won every SCPS race he has attended this season. Thats not to say that it was not an awesome race as Chance Noble (Team Cal Giant) was off again with another of his great starts where he led for a few laps before the lead group seemed to start sharing efforts pulling each other until the top four were spaced from the rest of the field about three-quarters into the race. Jason Lowetz of Team Bearclaw raced well and finished an impressive fifth but was just squeezed out of the lead group when Prenzlow and Michael Easter (Time Factory Team) started their attacks. The race really started getting interesting because of the strength that Easter has in the flats but while the two were starting to battle it out it was Chance Noble and Frederick Bottger who were holding on and rolling with the two. Then as the race was approaching its end, Bottger cracked and held onto his fourth place spot while Noble, Easter and Prenzlow excelled. On the last lap just approaching one of the technical sections, Noble dropped his chain, giving the Alan rider, Prenzlow, the green light to execute his final attack. By taking advantage of an unfortunate mechanical error and wits as Easter was not expecting such an early jump but it was just what was needed for Prenzlow to win. Easter did not hold back though as he continued his charge fending off the other riders and chasing down Prenzlow to the finish.
Another weekend of racing, crashes, Turkey Belt Bouts and life as the SCPS nears the end of the season with just three races remaining. Thanks to all the racers, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who make this wonderful series happen. The next race is the SCNCA championships or the battle of California as the Southern Californian and Northern Califronian cross riders will meet next week in Bakersfield for the Championships and SCPS # 8.
