Queen City Wheels Tuesday Night Time Trial Series
Cleves, OH
Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
While most of the times were off by 40-60 seconds we did have one PR by Matt Cunningham at 27:49, an improvement of 17 seconds.
The best ride of the night, and maybe the year and maybe even all-time, goes to Mike Keiser. If you don't know Mike he is a former national champion tri-athlete having won Lake Placid in his age bracket not long ago. He also participated in many Ironman Hawaii's with some of the fastest times in his age bracket in addition to placing in dozens of other national, regional and local events. Mike and I shared a strength coach twice a week for several years. I always told him that I hoped to be like him when I grew up. He always said that wouldn't happen because I would never grow up. Then he would leg press 800 lbs 8 to 10 times.
Several years ago as Mike was training for Hawaii he was hit by a car while on his bike. He suffered some very severe injuries the worst of which was to his brain. He spent many weeks in a coma and many months at Drake Hospital. He's made amazing progress in the years since the accident.
Tonight at the age of 67 Mike rode his recumbent bike at Cleves completing the course in 46:35. If you knew Mike at his peak you knew why people called him "Iron Mike". He was diligent in his training, had incredible endurance and loved to compete. I think tonights effort might have been his best ever. He's committed to coming back next year and going faster. We're going to hold him to it. Congratulations Mike on an inspiring ride!
