David Clinger wins First Union Invitational in Lancaster, Pennsylvania Lancaster, June 4, 2002- David Clinger of the United States Postal Service team scored the “biggest win of my career” in dominating fashion with a solo victory in the 91-mile First Union Invitational through the streets of Lancaster, PA. Clinger successfully dropped his breakaway companion Chris Wherry of the Mercury Cycling Team three miles from the finish line after Clinger was ordered to attack by his USPS team director Frankie Andreu, the 1998 winner of the event. The two men broke away from the field at the 70-mile point and quickly opened up a 1:30 gap that was never challenged. Australian Tom Leaper of the Navigators Cycling Team escaped the field on the last lap to finish third, 1:40 down on the winner. The First Union Invitational is considered to be one of the most difficult races in the United States because of its international field and hilly race course that constantly twists and turns. Boulder, Colorado native Wherry stated that, “there is no place to hide in Lancaster. Either you are strong or you are not.” The race was hard fought from the beginning, with an eight man breakaway group escaping at the 20-mile mark and holding a tenuous, 20 to 40 second lead for the next 35 miles. Once caught, the race exploded into a flurry of attacks and counter attacks until Clinger and Wherry launched their final race winning moves. Clinger now looks forward to the First Union USPRO Championship on Sunday where he “hopes the team will ride for me.” FIRST UNION INVITATIONAL 4 JUNE 2002 - LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, USA FINAL RESULTS Length: 84.11 Miles Avg Speed: 25.38 MPH PLACE NAME TEAM TIME DIFFERENCE 1 CLINGER David USP 3:18:52 3:18:52 2 WHERRY Chris MCR 3:19:08 @ 16 3 LEAPER Tom NVR 3:20:32 @ 1:40 4 GRISHKINE Oleg NVR 3:20:51 @ 1:59 5 PIATEK Zbigniew MRO 6 BARRY Michael USP 7 MATTOZZA Sbastien LAN 8 VOGELS Henk MCR 9 HINCAPIE George USP 10 HENDERSON Greg 7UP 11 DIONNE Charles 7UP 12 HORNER Chris PRI 13 MCKENZIE David ITN 14 CLERC Aurlien MQS 15 MCCORMACK Frank SAT 16 VAN HEESWIJK Max MX1 17 LIESWYN John 7UP 18 GERLACH Chad SIE 19 O'BEE Kirk NVR 20 WALTERS Mark NVR 21 SAUNDERS Erik OFO 22 ALBERTS Kirk JEL 23 GRNQVIST Thomas AMO 24 DECANIO Matt PRI 25 JOHNSON Tim SAT 26 ZIEWACZ Doug 7UP 27 MCCORMACK Mark SAT 28 D'HOLLANDER Glenn LOT 29 O'LOUGHLIN David OFO 30 PATE Danny PRI 3:21:20 @ 2:28 31 RAPINSKI Viktar SAT 3:27:36 @ 8:44 32 ZANOTTI Leonardo MQS 3:27:55 @ 9:03 33 WYRZYKOWSKI Zbigniew MRO 34 ERKER Jacob SCI 35 CRATER Andrew OFO 36 VAN HEEL Jon OFO 37 KNUDSEN Pete SCI 38 HUNT John SIE 39 PIERCE Colby OFO 3:28:02 @ 9:10 40 LARKIN Tim OFO 41 CREED Michael PRI 3:31:01 @ 12:09 42 SAYERS Mike MCR 43 ZAJICEK Phil MCR 44 MCRAE Chann USP 45 WADECKI Adam MRO 46 FISHER Chris SAT 47 WOHLBERG Eric SAT 48 SPINELLI Justin SAE 49 PEPOLI Cristian SAE 50 FRIEDICK Mariano JEL 51 CANDELARIO Alex PRI 52 PINEDA Oscar 7UP 53 POWER Ciaran NVR 54 CAMPONOGARA Siro NVR 55 MCCARTNEY Jason JEL 56 ZARATE ESTRADA Jesus MCR 57 TUFT Svein PRI 58 STOCKWELL Luke JIT 59 ROGERS Michael MQS 60 KLUCK Damon SAT 61 PETERSEN Soren SAT 62 GARDEYN Gorik LOT 63 DE CLERCQ Hans LOT 64 VANTHOURENHOUTSven MX1 65 STOIANOV Plamen MCR 4/06/2002 20:12:37 ______________________________________________________ Timing and results by AGR Technologies |
