The 2004 Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series moved into round two today completing the opening weekend double. A series of overnight thunderstorms ushered in a cold front that made today’s racing conditions at Evo Cross much different than those experienced yesterday at Blue Diamond. Not only was it one of the coldest days so far this season, unexpected high winds added to the bitterness. The course, a new one this year, looked like a fast one at first glance. But, appearances can be deceiving, and riders were treated to one of the more punishing courses around. The course allowed no room for rest and the high winds made pack riding a necessity for survival. The Elite women’s race provided a great deal of crowd excitement as the battle for the top three spots came down to the final lap. Early in the race, a group five started riding away from the remainder of the field. Contained within that group was yesterday’s winner at Blue Diamond Park Cross, Amber Itle (Yellow Breeches Racing), Melanie Swartz (Squadra Coppi), Betsy Schauer (Fort/GPOA) Caroline Hacker (Evolution Racing) and Sami Fournier (Velo Bella). Dangling close behind was Megan Clark ( Cycle-Smart). As the pace quickened, Fournier came off followed soon by Hacker. While the leaders focused on each other, no one was paying attention to the fact that a rider was charging through the field after getting a less than perfect start. First-time cross racer, Melissa Maurer (unattached), powered across the course, picking off riders at a surprising speed. Maurer made contact with the front trio of Schauer, Swartz and Itle and then sparks began to fly. Surprised by the appearance of Maurer, the original three ramped the pace up a bit, hoping to drop Maurer. Instead it was Swartz who faltered and lost contact. The hard pace continued to take its toll and on the last lap, Itle started to fade and struggled to maintain contact with Schauer and Maurer. Coming off the road and onto the grass for the final time, Schauer launched an attack that gapped Maurer. Hitting the barriers before the final turn for home, Schauer was over the barriers quickly but Maurer, still learning technique, bobbled badly. That bobble gave Schauer all the time she needed to round the corner and cross the line for the win. Maurer’s difficulties at the barriers almost cost her a position as hard charging Itle closed the gap and had Maurer in her sights. With Itle breathing down her neck, Maurer managed to hang on for second and Itle crossed the line three seconds behind for third. Although Swartz had to battle the strong, gusty winds alone for the last portion of the race, she held on for fourth crossing nine seconds after Itle. Hacker rounded out the top five. With twenty-nine riders on the start line and the cold winds still howling across the course, the Elite Men’s race promised to be another good one. Greg Wittwer (Cyclocrossworld.com) got off the line first but carried way too much speed into the first turn, resulting in a struggle to stay on course and allowing Glenn Turner (Evolution Racing) to take the lead. Turner’s lead was short-lived as Mike Yozell (Fort/GPOA) came flying past him. Close behind Yozell was teammate Ryan Leech. With Leech doing the lion’s share of the work, the pair started increasing the distance between themselves and a group containing Wittwer, Joe Reynolds (Wissahickon) and another Fort/GPOA teammate, Gunnar Shogren. Just as everyone thought that Leech and Yozell were gone for good, Wittwer dropped into another gear, jumped away from Shogren and Reynolds and bridged to the Fort/GPOA duo up front. Not content to simply make contact, Wittwer immediately attacked again. Yozell matched his acceleration but it was too much for Leech who was unable to go with the charging duo. Yozell not only matched Wittwer’s jump, he continued to drive the pace upward, eventually riding away from the Charlottesville, Virginia rider. Behind the Yozell - Wittwer battle, Shogren and Reynolds had been joined by Greg Marini (Bike Doctor). Shogren, Reynolds and now Marini, passed a fading Leech and soon a fading Wittwer. As one spectator observed out loud “there was a whole lot of detonation taking place out there.” With only Yozell ahead of them, it became a three-way battle for second place. Reynolds started to run out of steam late in the race, leaving Marini and Shogren to fight over the order of the top three. At the end, it was Yozell racking up his second straight Evo Cross win and Marini riding in ahead of Shogren for second place. Reynolds finished behind Shogren for fourth. Fifth place was claimed by Kris Auer (Alan MidAtlantic) who passed a struggling Wittwer within sight of the finish line. Wittwer finished sixth and was also the first U-23 rider across the line.
