With stages taking place on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, through
Storyland, and on the trails of Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, the Porky
Gulch Classic has the potential to be one of the most memorable cycling
events of the year.

The concept has developed over a few years. Great Glen hosted first the
RockPile Rampage cyclocross event in 2003 and then added the Porky Gulch
cyclocross event in 2004. With such a unique venue, and such heavy
competition on the race calendar the organizers put their heads together to
develop a race that could become a classic. The idea of the Story Land
crit is not original, as the race ran once in 2003 and has been talked about
ever since, first by those who raced and speak of it with an ear to ear
grin, and second by those who missed and have been anxious to race
through the famed Story Land rides and displays.

By creating a three stage event over the course of one weekend, competitors
will have an opportunity to explore the Mount Washington Valley and see why
such a strong cycling culture exists.

The race will start on Saturday morning with an individual time trial up to
the two mile mark on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, dubbed the Toughest Two TT, this race will be one of the few events to utilize the famed
Auto Road. This is the same auto road that Tyler Hamilton, Jeanie Longo,
Genevieve Jeanson, and Tom Danialson, have all set records on. This will
also mark the first time an event has allowed the cyclist to ride back down
the Auto Road once all the competitors have crossed the finish line.

Later that same day the race moves 15 miles south to Story Land, site of many
a children's adventure. Here the Story Land Crit will lap its way around the
various rides and displays that make Story land famous. The course will not
be a traditional critirum course, as the paved road way is narrow and there will
be many corners. But then again the entire weekend of racing is anything but
traditional. The Beginner category crit is 30 minutes in length and the others are
45 minutes. Story Land closes to the general public after Columbus Weekend.  Spectators are not allowed inside the gates of the park.  Volunteers are; so if you want to watch the action inside the gates, volunteer for a course marshal position (limited positions available)!

The weekend wraps up with the RockPile Rampage, a cyclocross race held
up at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center. The course will be a mix of
pavement, gravel roads, and a few sections of grass and run-ups for good
measure. The racing format will follow that of the Story Land Crit, a 30
minute race for the beginner field and a 45 minute field for the Intermediate and
Elite group.

There it is, the Porky Gulch Classic Stage Race. The question is, are you
going to have a first hand story you tell hundreds of times over the next
year or are you going to be kicking yourself for missing it? We'll see you
there.

Register now online! Day of race registration is available but the entry fee goes up to $80.

Rules of Racing

1: The most important rule is the first. This is a NON SANCTIONED EVENT !! All of the rules are subject to change if the organizers find it necessary or in the interest of the event and its participants. The organizer's goal is to provide a fun and competitive experience for all, and of course pay the bills!

2: Racing Classes

A: Once again, this is a non sanctioned event. Be fair to your fellow racers, register in the class you belong in. Sandbaggers will be disqualified!

B: The classes will be: Beginner, Intermediate & Elite.
C: The classes will then be divided into Junior- (12- 18) and under and adult over 18 in both men and women.

D: Starting fields will be divided by class; Intermediate and Elite classes will start together. Beginner class will start when there are no other classes on course.

3: Types of Competition

A: Prologue

1: The Toughest Two will be a hillclimb sprint event on the first two miles of the Mt. Washington Auto Road.
2: The start will be time trial style with riders departing on thirty second intervals.
3: Start order will be; Elite, Intermediate then Beginner.
4: There will be a time limit of 45 minutes from your start time to complete the climb.
5: Each racer may have a warm clothing bag delivered to the finish. All bags must be presented to the start official 30 minutes before the first start time.
B: Critirium
1: The Storyland Crit will be a criterium event within Storyland.
2: The start will be mass start by class.
3: This is a unique course. There are many hazards both natural and man made. The race organizers will make every effort to make the course as safe as possible, however all racers are expected to be conscientious of both the hazards and other riders on course.
4: Beginner class will race for 30 minutes plus a bell lap, Intermediate and Elite classes will race for 45 minutes plus a bell lap.
5: After the time has elapsed and the lead rider crosses the start/finish line the bell will sound. All riders will complete one last lap.
