Unfortunately, we will be postponing the first annual SpeedFreaks Stage Race to the weekend of October 45 and 25.
After checking the course and the weather forecast, Mike and I have decided to postpone the race to next weekend, same schedule, just different dates.
Obviously, it has been, and continues, to rain. I am not as concerned about the trail as I am about racer safety and quality of event. Because of the drainage provided by the Limestone and Karst topography of Rockland Farm, the trails do not really get too muddy, but they become extremely slick, especially in the pine tree sections. I think that in a race environment, there would be people sliding out all over the place and the potential for hitting trees is great. I am actually still recoveering from a fall I took 6 weeks ago that tore some muscles in my shoulder. This was caused by sliding out in a slick corner after a rain.
Second, I have always envisioned this race as being about SPEED. This course and the format of the race provides for some really fast speeds and lap times. I would rather wait a week and be able to see what you racers bois and girlz can do than have you either tip toeing around the course or slip-sliding all over the place.
I know it is 9 days away, but the forecast for next weekend looks good, with highs of 66 and no rain.
In light of these developments, I will be extending the pre reg rate of 110.00 to all those who wish to race next weekend, including those who register day of event. I am going to try to re-open registration on BikeReg, but am not sure if I will be able to do so. If you have not registered and plan to race, please contact me, as it will help trmendously to at least have you in the timing system database already
Thanks for understanding - Rob and Mike
The Inaugural SpeedFreaks Stage Race
Event description: The Inaugural SpeedFreaks Stage Race is a 2 day, 3 stage Mountain Bike Race to be held on October 17th and 18th 2009. The event will be held on a private farm overlooking the Potomac River 3.5 miles north of Leesburg Virginia.
This is a Solo event only and all competitors must complete all 3 races to be eligible for Awards.
Race Caps: We will be capping the number of registrants for this race. SpeedFreaks will have 250 slots available for purchase, based on a first come, first served basis.
Race Formats and Course Descriptions
Time Trial: Saturday Morning. This will be a 3.5 mile loop with riders starting every 20-30 seconds. Timing will be done using Chip Timing system, so extremely accurate. I expect finish times between 10 and 18 minutes.
Short Track: – Saturday afternoon. Races all afternoon on a .8 mile short track course laid out in the open so that Spectators can surround the entire course. I laid out a track that uses a lot of the rolling hills and rock features of Rockland farm to create a very fun, fast course. Course may evolve between now and the race. Most likely, Cat 3 and Junior racers will do 6 laps, Cat 2 and Single speeders will do 8-9 laps, and Cat 1 racers will do 11-12 laps. Goal is each race lasting about 30-45 minutes.
Marathon/Enduro: Sunday 4-5 hour Marathon race using the lengthened Leesburg Bakers Dozen course. The course is made up of rolling hills with plenty of semi-technical challenge in the form of rocks, roots, log piles, and small ledges. This is a fast course, but has been designed to accommodate all skill levels, from Beginner to Expert. The course has an additional 1.5 miles this year and will be run mostly in reverse of the 2009 Bakers Dozen. Final race start times will be announced once we see how many registrants we have in each category.
Pre–Riding: There will be 2 pre-ride opportunities tentatively scheduled for last weekend in September and Second weekend in October. Exact date and time will be announced at a later date All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver prior to pre-rides. I will also be sending out/Posting links to GPS files of all three courses within the next 10-14 days.
Please note: The course is located on a private, active farm. The trails are closed to the public aside from race activities. In order to ensure future events and rides, please do not attempt to “poach” the trails prior to or after the event.
Start Times:
Time Trial - Time Trial races will begin at 8:00am Saturday October 17. Racers will go off every 30 seconds. Start order will be Juniors, Single Speeders, Cat 3’s, Cat 2’s, and Cat 1’s. Once we see number of entries, I will send out more exact start times.
Short track – Short track racers will start about 1 hour after last time trial finisher. And last all afternoon. We are unable to provide exact times until we see how many racers per category we have. Our goal is to have no more than 40 racers in each heat. WE may combine categories to accomplish this. Conversely, we may also split categories into multiple heats, Example, if we have 75 Cat 2 Male racers, we will have two races, with finishing times establishing final placement.
Marathon – Assuming the race fills up at 250 racers, there will be two marathon races Sunday, One starting at 8:00, the other starting at around 12:00 or 1:00. Again, we need to see registration numbers to establish exact times and which categories will be at which time.
Categories:
Junior Male and Female – Junior Racers are racers aged 13-17. Junior Racers will race with the Cat 3 racers, but will be scored separately. If you are a 13-17 year old racer racing in any other category, you will be charged full registration fee as opposed to reduced registration fee for Juniors.
Single Speed Male and Female - One gear only, cross dressers welcome
Cat 1 Male and Female – Category 1 racers are racers who typically race Pro or Expert
Cat 2 Male and Female – Category 2 racers are racers who typically race Sport level
Cat 3 Male and Female – Category 3 racers are those either new to the sport or those with riding experience, but may not have enough “race” experience to feel comfortable racing at the Cat 2 level..
Race Director reserves right to combine any categories based on low racer counts. Race directors also reserve right to reassign racers to appropriate category based on Time Trial finish time. This will help to ensure appropriate competition within your category and help reduce Sandbagging.
Racers are permitted to transfer/sell your spot, but will be assessed $15.00 fee. Please note that there will be a $15.00 fee assessed for all racer changes. While you are free to register yourself and your teammates, I recommend registering your teammates using their correct information in order to avoid this fee.
