Celebrating it's sixth year of dishing out the hardest roads in our neck of the woods and raising money to benefit the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer, Monkey Knife Fight returns Saturday, April 19th. Come and enjoy a 70 mile bike ride through the rolling hills of Emmaus, PA. Includes 15 miles of dirt roads and 6500 feet of climbing.13 of the dirt roads will be used to determine the 2014 champion. Or just ride it for fun at your own pace.
$25. Waiver required. Not a race.
All proceeds benefit the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer, which has raised over a million dollars for the American Cancer Society and Dream Come True since 1983.
WHAT'S IT LIKE?
WHAT TO KNOW:
It's a social ride, with some competitive sections thrown in the mix. Most of the 70 miles are paved, with thirteen dirt road "sectors" that will be used to determine the overall MKF winner. Course maps will be provided, so you don't need to keep up with those interested in keeping a hard tempo going. And there are options to make the course shorter (and avoid some of the truly brutal climbs).
Ride LEAVES South Mountain Cycles at 9AM. Mandatory Racer Meeting at 8:45AM. Please park on any of the residential street around SMC, but NOT in the Armetta's/Buss Paints lot.
Check out the route (same as 2013). There are multiple stops at the St. John Hill Church parking lot at mile 29, 33 and 43 of the Monkey Knife Fight. This will be fairly primitive: Water cooler. Some snacks. A Porta-John. There will also be an Easter Egg hunt at the church, so don't come in hot.
You can put some things in a car at the start of MKF that you'd want to have at the rest stop. Likewise you can dump some stuff in the car to be driven back to the finish. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for any of that stuff. Mark it well. Remember to get it at the finish.
Because of this location, you will be able to skip segments of the route. There will be some directions how to do that there. Don't expect a lift back if you're tired. If you're cooked at the stop, consider skipping a categorized section (or 2, or 3).
No follow vehicles or outside support vehicle of any type will be allowed, except as specifically approved by the MKF. It is unsafe to have a caravan of vehicles following the ride. Sorry. Carry what you need if you have a flat or problem. You will be expected to fix your own flats and do minor repairs.
Past MKF winners 2009 Mike Cushionbury, 2010 Gabe Lloyd, 2011 Bobby Lea, 2012 Andrew Bernstein, and 2013 Jimi Shane Hendrix. 2013 Women's Winner: Mariah Valentine.
Thanks for fighting it.
