Labor Day Bicycle Races Welcome Back Families
Bernards Township, N.J. -- Bernards Township welcomed back its residents from their summer vacations for the 17th consecutive year with the Olde Mill Inn Tour of Basking Ridge bicycle race on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2008. The event, the second longest-running criterium event in New Jersey behind the Tour of Somerville, featured 325 adult cyclists competing in various USA Cycling-sanctioned categories. More than 250 children participated in the towns popular childrens bicycling events.
Bernards Township Mayor John Carpenter officially kicked off the event, followed by township resident Samantha Cordasco, 12, who sang the national anthem. Nationally known Giant Bicycle stunt rider Jeff Lenosky thrilled the crowd after the childrens races with his breath-taking bicycle trials performance.
Everything went beautifully, said Jen Gander, Bernards Township Parks & Recreation Director.
Adult and Junior racers in ten different age or experience categories completed between 6 and 25 laps of the 1.1-mile course through the streets of the historic downtown. National bicycling organization USA Cycling sanctioned the days Junior and Adult licensed events.
Noah Granigan of Cape May, N.J., won the 6-lap, age 10-12 Junior race. James Geddis, of Jackson, N.J., won the Junior, age 13-14, event. David Stires, of Bridgewater, N.J., won the 10-lap, age 15-16 event. Franklin Saillot of Berkeley Heights, N.J., won the Junior, age 17-18 category race, while Abigail Borah, of Belle Meade, N.J., won the Junior Girls, age 17-18 event.
Brian Butts from Arlington, Va., won the featured 25-lap Category 1,2,3 event, in 1 hour, 1 minute, and 49 seconds.
Scott Hodder, of Ocean Port, N.J., won the 15-lap, age 45 and over category race, while Jamie Troy of Liberty Cycle took second.
Dave Fuentes of Ashburn, Va., won the 15-lap, age 35 and older event. Race promoter Greg Cordasco, 46, of Liberty Cycle raced in the age 35 and over event, finishing eighth. With his placing, Cordasco maintained his first-place standing in the states Garden State Cup series of races in the 35 and over category. Cordasco clinched the age 45 and over Garden State Cup title the day before on Sunday, August 31, at the Denville Cycling Challenge in Denville, N.J., making history by leading the season-long Garden State Cup series of races in two categories simultaneously.
Samuel Barker of Maplewood, N.J., riding for Liberty Cycle, won the 15-lap Category 4/5 race. Also, in the 4/5 race, Stephen Persak, riding for Liberty Cycle, took fifth place, and Liberty Cycles Anthony Diaz won tenth place.
Josef Urzedowski of Woodbridge, N.J., won the 10-lap, age 55 and over age category race. Tom Van der Poel took first-place in the 5-lap Citizens race.
The days events were sponsored by the Olde Mill Inn and presented by Bernards Township and Liberty Cycle.
