SCPS #6- ECO CROSS

The Eco Friendly Tour

With a commitment to social and ecological responsibility, the SoCalCross Prestige Series has become the first-ever CERTIFIED GREEN Sports Series in the nation! All Prestige Series events are practicing earth-friendly responsibilities: recycling paper, bottles, cans, tires, tubes, CO2 cartridges... minimizing the carbon footprint of every event. As part of the Certified Green mission, the Prestige Series has introduce a weekly off-the-bike competition held throughout the season to promote Global Cooling through individuals Eco-Actions. The Go Green Racer competition provides racers the opportunity to complete as many Eco-Actions as they can every week such as replacing 5 standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs in an effort to earn points towards the Go Green Racer overall title. The rider with the most points every week will wear the Go Green Racer Jersey! To Learn More About this Green Series and its Eco-Partners go to: www.socalcross.com

This weeks race was the most important in this Green series as the Eco-Cross was to remind everyone of the importance in lowering car emissions and living a greener lifestyle. The ECO-EXPO: Presented by CICLE (www.BikeNow.org) was in place to educate all on bicycle commuting and car free actions we can take, and show how easy it can be not to reach for the car keys. The event organizers (Dorothy Wong and the CICLE Team) went as far as creating VIP carpool parking zone for racers who share the ride allowing them front row options. Totally Tubular showed off their cool recycled bike goods and since the bicycle is already a green resource, the Eco-Cross showcased renewable and sustainable bamboo and steel frames by Calfee Designs and Townsend Cycles. Spectators were also blessed with the ART OF CROSS, Jeff Herrings cross-inspired original works. Jeff was on hand accepting donations of old bike parts to his Art of Cross used parts bin as he will use these to create the best Team Awards this season.

The racing was not as friendly or green as the Eco-Expo. With the series now at its mid-point, racers are acknowledging that all the categories are getting stronger and the groups are taking longer to separate on course and the weather in Southern California finally cooperated in making it feel like cyclocross season as bikes came off the course with mud clinging to them. This in turn is made the racing harder and more interesting with efforts such as the mens 3-4 and single-speed winner Bobby Lagin, Jr. (Team Platinum/Specialized) who took home two wins in back-to-back categories.

The womens elite was off with an explosive start again as the young Coryn Rivera of Team Redline was off from the start again leading the group through the first lap until she caught a tree on the hairy 180-degree descending turn that entered the Kool-in-Fit forest on the front part of the course. It was not a major crash Coryn expressed but enough to tangle her up and take her out of the lead for a lap. Where Tonya Bray (Team CICLE) took charge leading the pack into the tight turns and through the remainder of the lap where the two were battling it out with Dorothy Wong, Christie Pleiss, and Mandy Eakins of Team CICLE following so closely it looked to be anyones race. However, Bray dropped her chain allowing the wise Rivera to take advantage of the misshape and push out in front of the group again. From here Coryn Rivera never looked back taking the win on the day with Tonya Bray, Dorothy Wong, Christie Pleiss, and Mandy Eakins of Team CICLE finishing off the race in this order to fill the rest of the podium.

The mens elite was powerful again even on this soft and technically challenging course. Last weeks winner Mike Easter of the Time Factory Team was out again pushing hard but it was Chance Nobel (Cal Giant/Specialized) again who started the race leading the group. Chance seems to be getting stronger the later it comes in the season but he could not hold the lead as it was Brent Prenzlow (Alan North America) who took his lead. Prenzlow returned to the SCPS series this week, after his visit to Colorados Redline Cup last weekend. The Alan North America rider took the win in cool fashion as he has all season. Early in the race the lead group looked like something more from a crit but as the race went on racers began to drop from the tightly filed cluster. It was Frederick Bottger (Team Bearclaw) again who looked strong pedaling along with Easter and others through the race and this group plus many others held together until the finish. It was exciting to watch as Prenzlow once in his comfort zone started to gap himself from the rest finishing with at least twenty-seconds on the group. The young Nobel was on his trail gapping himself from the pack too as in the final sprint Bottger dropped his chain coasting in for fourth while the Time Factory rider, Easter snapped his chain also coasting in for third. These three were putting on an intense show but the excitement was not finished there as the two with mechanical errors narrowly escaped the path of John Behrens (Team Bailey/Black Mountain Bikes).

It was another fun weekend of racing, social change, and life as the SCPS hit its mid-point and will take a break until the day after Thanksgiving for its annual Turkey-Trot. Thanks to all the racers, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who are making this wonderful series happen. The growth and possibilities for this series seem endless.
