Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series
Round 2 - Cycle-Smart Amherst International Cyclo-Cross
Amherst, MA
UCI Category 2
October 27, 2002

D'Alusio dominates, Gullickson goes 3 for 3 in Verge Series

Marc Gullickson of Mongoose/Hyundai won his third straight Verge New England
Championship Cyclo-Cross Series race of the year at the Cycle-Smart Amherst
International Cyclo-Cross, Amherst, MA. As in his last Verge Series win two
weeks ago in Gloucester, MA, his teammate Todd Wells had a lot to do with
the final result.

The elite men's race started out looking much like the Clif Bar domination
of the women's elite race, fast starters Andy Jaques-Maynes and Jackson
Stewart in the red Clif Bar skinsuits took turns leading and forcing the
pace for much of the first two laps. Meanwhile, Gullickson had a small slip
on one of the more innocuous corners during lap one, leaving him chasing
back onto the lead group for much of the next lap. When he did get on during
lap two, that made a very full lead group of seven riders: Jaques-Maynes and
Stewart from Clif Bar, Gullickson and Wells from Mongoose/Hyundai, the
Saturn Pair of Tim Johnson and Mark McCormack, and lone K2 rider Jonny "The
Cat" Sundt.

This was clearly too large a group to peacefully co-exist on a course
combining long grassy power sections with deceivingly slick corners, made so
by the previous day's rain. Two sets of barriers and an unrideable
off-camber added to the obstacles in a race where the leaders averaged lap
times of under six minutes.

As soon as it was clear Gully was in contact and recovered, the
barrier-hopping Wells attacked at the end of lap two and stayed out front
for the next lap himself. Behind, Tim Johnson rode everyone save Gullickson
off his wheel in pursuit, but was unable to close the gap. Coming to the end
of lap three, the inevitable attack came on the hardest climb of the course.
As soon as the Mongoose/Hyundai pair came together, it was off to the races.
Gullickson took the victory over his teammate, in front of family and
friends over from his hometown of New Paltz, NY.

Behind the winning pair, Tim Johnson rode a steady race alone to finish a
strong third. 2001 race winner Mark McCormack was eventually re-caught by
Jaques-Maynes and Stewart with just a couple laps to go, but fended off an
explosive Jaques-Maynes attack on the final lap to pick up 4th on the day.
Andy Jaques-Maynes held on for 5th. Having won all three Verge New England
Championship Cyclo-Cross Series this season, Marc Gullickson retains his
series leadership.

The top U23 rider was no surprise, with Giant/Balance Bar's Adam Craig, the
current U23 National champion, finishing ahead of Josh Anthony
(CycloCrossWorld.com) and the improving Jeremy Powers (DEVO/Balance Bar).
Along with Wells, Craig was one of the few riders consistently able to hop
the second set of barriers.

On the women's side, group racing was the expected order of the day, and the
favorites did not disappoint. A fast start and several early attacks from
2001 winner Lyne Bessette (CycloCrossWorld.com) were matched by Verge Series
leader Mary McConneloug (Seven Cycles) and the Clif Bar duo of Carmen
D'Alusio and Gina Hall.

The story of the day turned out to be the dominance of Carmen D'Alusio.
Bolstered with the confidence of two wins over Bessette the previous weekend
in Delaware, D'Alusio used her clear technical superiority and impressive
power to attack Bessette on the second lap, and never be challenged again.
Clearly D'Alusio is a woman on a mission, and with her performances so far
this season she has established herself as the top cyclo-crosser in North
America.

While D'Alusio ran away with the win, Lyne Bessette made a strong effort to
chase her for several laps, but was eventually caught by Hall and
McConneloug. Repeated slips on the course's technical sections cost her
precious energy, and she eventually had to settle for fourth. Gina Hall
looked to have the advantage over McConneloug, hitting the paved finishing
straight first on the final lap, but the Seven Cycles rider showed again
what an explosive sprinter she is, coming by Hall in the final meters.

Christine Vardaros, riding for new cyclo-cross sponsor SallySpicer.com, was
hampered by a poor start. She eventually fought her way through the early
traffic however, finishing a strong fifth. Mary McConneloug retains her
Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross series leader's jersey with a win
and two second places in three events.

U.S. junior national champion Jesse Anthony (Saturn Development) took an
expected victory in the Laughing Dog Cyclery junior race, by nearly a minute
over CCB's Konrad LeBas and GMBC's Jamey Driscoll. Todd Well's younger
brother Troy, riding for Kingston Cyclery, picked up fourth ahead of Joey
Thompson (DEVO/Balance Bar).

2001 Verge Series Champion made a return to the top step of the podium in
the Serotta Men's 35+race, while Sam Morse retains the series lead. U.S.
National Champion Paul Curley picked up the win and the Verge Series lead in
Men's 45+. Matt White won the men's B race with Matt Hersey keeping the
series lead. The PB Computing C men's race winner was Tom Hopper, while Kate
Northcott won the Integrity Development and Construction women's C race and
Ryan Barlow the Cub Junior race.

With over $25,000 in prize money, six internationally sanctioned rounds in
five states, and all events world-class, the Verge New England Championship
Cyclo-Cross Series is once again the premier cyclo-cross racing series in
the U.S. Verge, the title Sponsor of the New England Cyclo-Cross Series

cycling-related accessories. Look for the Verge New England Championship
Cyclo-Cross Series jersey on the backs of the Series Leaders, and look for
the Verge truck at the races.

Round 4 of the 2002 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series will

Farmington, CT. Like the first three rounds of the Verge Series, it is a
U.S. team selection event for the World Championships.
