Northampton Youth Cycling Series #1
Northampton, MA
21 Jun 2005
Well the longest day of the year has come and with it the first race of the second annual Northampton Youth Cycling Series.
Under bright blue skies (it will NOT rain on Tuesdays this year!) with balmy temperatures 24 local (and some not so local) children, ages 5 12, came to Look Park to participate in this years opening race. With the normal four age categories well represented, a fifth race was then added to the card for 4 year-olds and under.
The first race of the night was the 5 and 6 year-olds. Six youngsters fought a close race on the short course. Matt Conner was first with Quinn North-Smith right behind him. A shootout for third saw Regan Bishop coming across the line right in front of Michael Ackerman. John Lussier and Ileana Fourier rounded out the field for fifth and sixth.
After a short break to reconfigure the course 7 and 8 year-olds lined up for their race. Eli Friman, who jumped out to an early and decisive lead, placed first. Cooper Holland and David Stamm came across the line almost neck and neck with Cooper ending up ahead by barely a wheel. David Rioux, Amelia Francis, and Lindy Crowley then finished within the next few seconds. William Jen and Christianna Gardner were moments behind them.
The 9 and 10 year-olds took the field for the first multi-lap race of the night. After instructions were given Avery Norton-Smith followed Elis example, put the jump on the field and used his momentum to take first place. Tenzin Lekmon put a final push in the last lap to slide in just in front of Alaska Pinard. The rest of the field; Erin Bishop, Austen Rioux, Emily Stamm, Frances Lussier, and Dustin Ackerman, then came in with barely a bike length between riders.
The final full lap race of the evening was three lap shoot out (shortened due to time constraints) between Patrick Crowther and Tenzin Yeshi. Patrick sprinted the last half lap to take first place.
Finally a 50 meter dash was set-up for the four and unders (and accompanying parents). Gabriel and his mother set a new record for this course. Second and third were hotly contested by Aidan and Oscar and their dads. Aidan (and Brian) managed to just edge out Oscar (and Chris).
Congratulations to all of our participants and thank you to the cheering section. Hope to see you all again next week.
