1st Annual

The inaugural Rhode Island State Road Cycling Championships will be held from September 20th through 26th

The Course: 50 miles of scenic Rhode Island terrain through the rolling hills of Tiverton and Little Compton. Within the 50 mile course there are 5 designated RACE SEGMENTS.

The Rules: During the week long “race window” (starting at 12am on Monday September 20th until 11:59pm Sunday September 26th) competitors must ride (and complete) the entire course in the correct orientation, however competitors will only be scored from the times collected during the 5 GPS segments along the route. Times recorded from Strava will be used to tally and score each segment. The cumulative time added up from all 5 segments will be used to determine the overall results and the state champion in each category. Note: 2 of the 5 segments will finish uphill and will be used to determine a “King of the mountains” in each category and 2 of the segments will finish on flat roads and be used to determine a “sprint winner” in each category.

Competitors will only be given one chance to compete - if you upload your ride at any point during the week long window it will be officially scored and you will not be given a 2nd chance to race the course. When the course is published, competitors are encouraged to pre-ride the course and familiarize themselves with the terrain, traffic and intersections (if you upload your pre-ride to Strava before the race officially starts it will not count for any scoring purposes) NOTE: the segments will be posted and marked 24 hours prior to the start of the event. This is a GPS based event held on open roads with no traffic marshals - this is a ride at your own risk event

This event is individually scored, but drafting off of fellow competitors is allowed. However, equipment should conform to mass start rules - no aero bars or time trial bikes. Riders are allowed to form allegiances during segments and ride in a team time trial formation if they wish (simply put, riders will be scored individually but team tactics are allowed).

Categories - medals will be awarded for each of the following state championship categories (note: A and B categories are self selected). General criteria for selecting your category: If you are competing regularly in mass start cycling events you should be competing in an A category. If you have limited racing experience or you are not somebody who regularly rides a bike you should be competing in a B category.
