The Sandy Neck Fat Bike Winter Classic (SNFBWC) is back!

The 2022 edition of this 15 mile party ride will be the same route as last year - zigzagging back and forth across Sandy Neck. This year we will again be riding in daylight so we can enjoy Sandy Neck’s spectacular scenery. As in past years, funny apparel is encouraged.

Race swag includes a long sleeve jersey, drink ticket, dinner, and the knowledge that you’ve donated to two worthy non-profits. Pick up your jersey at registration, we have 100!

Online registration only. Check in begins at 11:00am on race day.

Ride begins at 1pm with a mass start roll out, on the beach. We expect all participants to finish and safely exit the Sandy Neck course by 4:30pm, just after the sun sets. If you think it will take you longer than 3-½ hours to complete, you may start early, if you tell the official at registration.

All riders will be checked in at the beginning and, more importantly, checked out at the end - everybody has to be accounted for before the volunteers and Sandy Neck Ranger Staff can finish their day and go to the party and we don’t want to lose anybody!

The Lighthouse aid station will include a water bubbler for refilling your water bottles, cookies or brownies, and maybe more. Note that the Lighthouse is on private property, so we can have all kinds of fun. Don’t hang out too long; budget your time. The aid station will close at 3:30pm. Again: Everybody has to be off the race course by 4:30pm and checked off by a race official as having safely completed the ride.

If you want to compete for the prizes - donated by the Bike Zone of Cape Cod - the race will be determined by the fastest combined time of two Strava Segments. Prizes will go to the top three men and top three women. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will be decided by Rock, Paper, Scissors (best two out of three at the After Party).

The first segment begins a hundred yards or so after the start and ends on the beach before the Lighthouse (https://www.strava.com/segments/30358128). The second segment starts after exiting the Lighthouse driveway and ends 100 yards or so before the Sandy Neck Gatehouse, which is the end of the race and where you will be checked off by an official (https://www.strava.com/segments/30358166).

We set it up this way so even if you want to crush the route and try to podium (note: there won’t actually be a podium - this is a party ride), you can hang out at the Lighthouse without changing your race result.

All intersections will be clearly marked with arrows and/or race tape. While the elevation on this route is minimal, the challenge is grinding through several long stretches of deep, sugary sand. There are a few short walk up ascents and a few exciting but short descents.

Proceeds for SNFBWC 2022 will benefit two local charities that have a stake in the long term well-being and protection of the Sandy Neck barrier beach:
Barnstable Land Trust (http://blt.org/), and
MassAudubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary (https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/long-pasture).

All participants are required to wear a helmet and carry phones with ringers on in case of emergency and to help us account for you if you aren’t checked off at race end for whatever reason.

Once you are registered be sure to join the Strava Club. This is where we score both segments! After you are registered join this Strava Club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/466019/members. In the event of technical problems with determining the true results using Strava, we would like to emphasize that this is a fat bike party ride and it’s supposed to be fun. You must use Strava to be scored - the timing official will use only Strava for final results.

Directions to the start: From 6A in East Sandwich, follow Sandy Neck Road past the Gatehouse to the main parking lot at the end of the road. The address is: Sandy Neck Beach, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Post-ride party will be at Off the Grid (https://www.offthegridcapecod.com/), in Sandwich off of Route 6A, conveniently located near Route 6 by the Cape Cod Canal. Party will be from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. One beverage of your choice and dinner are included as part of your event shwag. Additional beverages are available for sale. All riders and volunteers get a 2022 commemorative jersey.

Party location: Off the Grid, 91 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA 02563 (508-241-8684)

Rain or Shine - No Refunds

Additional useful information:
At a casual pace, the route will take most people well under three hours. The winning times will be approximately 1-½ hours, not including hanging out time.
Check the weather and dress appropriately.
The difficulty of the route is largely dependent on the temperature and the moisture content of the sand.
There are a half dozen or so challenging but short hike-a-bikes.
Bail outs are permitted as long as you check out at the end, but the race route is only 15 miles and we encourage you to ride the whole thing.
A Sandy Neck ranger and a bicycle mechanic will follow the race in case there are any situations requiring assistance.
No tire size regulations - ride whatever you want. However, the Town of Barnstable prohibits Ebikes on Sandy Neck.
We recommend lowering your tire pressure, depending on your weight, to 4 to 6 PSI, or, as low as you can go without hitting your rims.
Pre-Ride: https://www.strava.com/routes/2893178626970685656. NOTE: The section from Trail 6 around the point of Sandy Neck to the Lighthouse is only permissible on race day. When you see a ‘No Bikes’ sign, respect it and continue on the main trail.
