2004 Virginia Cyclo-Cross Series / Panorama Farm 2
Sunday, December 19, 2004
Charlottesville, VA
92 riders ignored the inclement weather forecast and made the trip to Panorama Farm for race 5 in the VACX. The highlight of the day was seeing the National Championship Jersey worn by 13 year old Hollis Owens. She was all smiles! A strong field of 33 C Men started the day on a frozen surface. By the end of their race only 1:19 separated the first 9 riders! Newcomer Travis Hurt of Appalachian State took the win by 20 seconds over the C Men's series leader Frank Haranzo of Blue Ridge Bicycling. In the Men's 35+ race, Charlottesville Racing Club's Ed Dickenson took the win which now makes him the series leader in that category.
CRC also took the win on warmer, slippery surface (translation: a few more riders hit the deck!) as 45+ newcomer Mark Kutney and now series leader defeated the MABRA 45+ champ Jim Bronson by 2:29. The Charlottesville Racing Club continued its winning ways when first time cross racer Ben King took the Junior 15-18's race followed by teammate Nick Pence and 3rd place Fulton Paisley of MVC. The Cub Junior race was taken by series leader Jesse Saldana (male) of Evolution Cycling followed by National Champ Hollis Owens (female) from Blackwater Bikes.
The B Men provided another very competitive race as only 47 seconds separated the first three places! Series leader Mark Wilson of Ocean Front was defeated by Stephen De Lisle of Hilton Cycling/Team Contes with Chris Huhn (MABRA Men's B Champ) taking third. These three riders are only separated by 10 points with one race left in the series!
The A and B Women raced together and saw the Women's B series leader Patti Williams of Cobblestone take the over-all win from A winner Pam Zimmerman of James River Velo. Women's B rider (second in the series) was DNF with nasty crash that her to the ER for stitches. By 2pm the course had dried and was packed down and was primed for fast lap times. That's just what the A Men did as Greg Wittwer of Cyclocross World set the fasted times of the day as he defeated a stubborn Jon Hansen of Richmond Ciclismo by 1:50 as Ed Dickenson of CRC scored his second podium of the day by taking 3rd place.
The 2004 Virginia Cyclocross Series is a 6 race series with events in Charlottesville, Richmond, Lynchburg and King George Virginia.
