When a participant receives a transferred registration they are now able to move into a different category than the original registration. This makes handling transfers much easier, as now a participant in a restricted category, such as a men's category, can transfer their spot to someone who will move into the women's category. Stipulations can be applied to how a person receiving a transfer can move inside your event; you can set it so that a person receiving a transfer can only move inside a group header, instead of in the entire event.
