Fort/GPOA team scores a double as Schauer and Leech win at Beacon Cross

Beautiful, sunny weather with temperatures in the 70's made it difficult to believe
it was early November and Beacons' notorious sand sections had many riders wishing
they were sunning in beach chairs instead of running across the beach. The promoter's
addition of a long sandy beach run this year made sure riders' legs and lungs were
already on fire as they turned towards the infamous terraced run-up. When the dust
cleared, or more appropriately, when the sand cleared, the Pittsburgh-based Fort/GPOA
team walked away with wins in both Elite categories.

Betsy Schauer (Fort/GPOA) took early command of the Elite Women's race and never
looked back. Although Schauer opened up to a comfortable gap, Megan Render (Snow Valley)
never gave up and kept charging all the way to the line. Her efforts earned her a well
fought second place and valuable points in the battle for the series lead. . Caitlyn
Tuel (Sobe/Cannondale) rode solidly to claim third and Sami Fournier (Velo Bella) took
fourth. Bonnie Stoeckl (Evolution Racing) finished fifth.

In the Elite Men's race Ryan Leech (Fort/GPOA), Joe Reynolds (Wissahickon ) and Greg
Ferguson (Fort/GPOA) came into the final stages of the last lap together but Ferguson
fell off the pace and Leech put in one final jump to get clear of Reynolds before the
finishing stretch. The teamwork of Fort/GPOA team made things tough for Reynolds all
day including a lap or two earlier when Ferguson attacked and got clear. He had a
thirteen second gap heading into the sand pit but Reynolds was able to reel him back
in. Reynolds' work took its toll and eventually enabled Leech to get enough breathing
room to take the win. Reynolds, who continues to get stronger week after week, took
second and Ferguson finished third. Bill Elliston (Ideal Tile) out sprinted Les
Leach (Wissahickon) to take fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Masters 35+ race was won by Ransome Weaver (Guys Bicycles) by a mere two seconds
over second place finisher Eric Schlauch (Somerset Wheelmen). Other winners of the day
included Chris Ruhl (East Coast Velo) in the Juniors' race, Carolyn Popovic (Penn State)
in Women's B and Sean Gallagher (Tri Speed) in the Men's B race. Dave Chambien
(Tim Cycle) won the Men's C category.

Next week the series moves to Camp Hill, PA on Saturday for the Saturn Classic (UCI)
and Marysville, PA on Sunday for the Harrisburg City Islanders' Rockville Bridge 'Cross
Classic.
